1.1 BACKGROUND
OF THE STUDY
In
Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, farming is an art. Farming is
the only source of survival and the people have used farming for all the
developmental projects seen in their locality. The people are so entwined in
farming that no matter how highly placed a person is in government circle, he
must still own farms and think farming Essient (2010) said that the Yala market
which was the greatest foods market in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria is
still one of the greatest food markets in the south south zone. Indeed, Yala is
the greatest producer of yam, cassava and rice in Cross River State.
With
the process from their farm produce, they have been able to develop their
immediate environment. Equally, they have been able to use the farm produce to
sponsor their daughters and sons to schools, resulting in their higher
positions in government. Farming may be looked as a mean occupation by narrow
minded people, but with what the Yala people are doing with their farm process,
farming cannot be under-rated. This project work “Farmers’ motivation through
Agricultural Banks and farm produce productivity” is seeking the Bank’s
motivation in quest of increasing productivity.
Before
the exploration of oil in Nigeria, farming was the main source by which the
country earned her foreign exchange. This was in cocoa, palm produce,
groundnut, beniseed and cereals. However, the producers of the above mentioned
crops were not in the business of producing yams. So, the Yala people specialized
in tuber crops and supplied those who were in commercial farming their food
needs. It is of note that the vegetation of Yala is suitable for tuber crops.
The people therefore needed assistance as to boost their farming expedition.
